Get a Group, Do a Thing

Have you or your friends ever said to each other, "I'm just not sure what to do"? Gather them up and donate your labor together. It doesn't have to take more effort than having people over for dinner or going to see a movie together. Many nonprofits or mutual aid organizations support people most impacted by systemic oppression, but you'll also be able to find groups that work to shift the system itself.

Be aware: not all organizations have the resources it takes to organize volunteers.

So grab your group and find a local place to volunteer some hours. Examples Seattle might reflect what you can find in your own region:

  • Bike Works: Among other things, this nonprofit collects, fixes, and distributes bikes to youth in economically-unsupported neighborhoods. Bring your group in for a bike cleaning session—supplies and training provided.

  • YWCA: The Phyllis Wheatley branch serves the historically Black and currently gentrifying Central District. Arrange for your group to do whatever they ask: scrub floors, pick or deliver supplies, weed, etc.

  • La Resistencia: Create respite packs of food or supplies to deliver to folks impacted by the immigrant enforcement system staging a protest encampment outside the NW Detention Center.

  • SHARE/WHEEL: Organize a collection of outdoor gear like tents, warm clothes, rain gear etc. to donate to this grassroots community of homeless people coordinating several tent cities.
