Hell of A Book: A Novel

I don’t know how I missed Jason Mott’s Hell of a Book in 2021, when it was published and won the National Book Award. I think it’s amazing.

“A good story was the only way to tell the truth.” I believe this is Jason Mott’s intention in writing this book. It’s also what the protagonist, an author himself, says about his own book, also called Hell of a Book. There are countless plays on reality and imagination, story and truth, throughout the book…and all the while it stays readable, touching, even funny

I felt tricked in a perfect way: the narrator is wildly unreliable, yet absolutely accurate in demonstrating how racism works in our lives.
