How Often Do You Think About Being White?

I know, this may not seem like a concrete action with an immediate impact on systemic racism. Yet, white supremacy culture is effective because it renders ‘whiteness’ invisible. Seeing whiteness, in ourselves and in our world, is the basis for profound impact.

Here’s the action to take:

Answer this: how often are you aware of being white? Choose along this continuum:

Rarely - Monthly - Weekly - Daily - Hourly

Pay attention each day for a week and note what happens.

As time goes on, let your reflection deepen:

  • What is it that triggers your awareness of being white?

  • In these moments of awareness, what are you experiencing in your body, feelings, emotions?

  • How often do you imagine people of color are aware of their racialized identity?
